Don't Put it Off!

The End of the Year.... right around the corner, so there is no better time than now to slow down and spend an hour (a) reviewing and reflecting on this year and (b) planning and dreaming up what you want your club to look like and accomplish next year.

Yes, this is a two-part process because to simply review the year without giving thought to what you want to continue, change or improve would be a complete waste of your time.

It's important during this process that you not allow yourself to fall into the easy trap of thinking about what you’d like to do or musing about what you want to change, without ever taking the time to develop an action plan to make those things happen. Even if you are pleased with this year’s results, it’s important to plan how you will continue on that path. Embrace the adage, “Planning without action is futile, action without planning is fatal”.

Start with a few questions, for which there are no right or wrong answers. Know that for you to truly benefit from this exercise you must be honest with your answers.

  • How do you feel about the last year overall?
  • What was the most important lesson you learned?
  • What do you want to do more of?
  • What do you want to do less of?
  • What worked?
  • What didn’t work?
  • What were you happiest doing?
  • What stressed you out the most?
  • What if any changes would you like to make?

After you finish, use your answers to help you develop your plan of action.

For example:

Question: What stressed you out the most?

Answer: Members who consistently fail to read the BOM and come only to socialize.

Plan of Action: Initiate a discussion about my concerns at the next meeting. Remind members we are a book club and reading the book is not negotiable. Introduce a system of fines to combat it.

And while you're at it, take a look at your by-laws or club charter to ensure it is still relevant....

Have a wonderful holiday!
